of the Season and happiness and prosperity for the New Year. The committee wishes
everyone Christmas cheer and a safe and happy holday period.
Nick Edmunds granted PDYC’s highest
honour
Our newest Life Member is Nick Edmunds. Nick has
been a member of PDYC for over 25 years, and for
much of that time has concentrated on ocean racing a
number of yachts, all self-built. He has conquered what
is probably the holy grail for many Australian yachtsmen,
the Sydney to Hobart, has done a dozen or so
Westcoasters, and many Melbourne to Devonport and
Launcestons, including a win.
Perhaps one of Nick’s biggest achievement has been
to compete in every of the 21 Australian Three Peaks
Races so far, with overall and divisional wins along the
way. Nick has not only has he represented the club on
the water, he has contributed significantly behind the
scenes, for two years as Commodore, as a committee
member of the Australian Three Peaks Race committee,
firstly when the race was run under its own association,
and more recently for the last 4 years when the
race has been run as a PDYC event.
Throughout the development of the club premises and
grounds over the last 20 or so years, Nick has been a
valuable contributor through making available the resources
of his business to help us out where possible,
whether it be a truck to cart the beams for the Jetty
refurbishment up to be galvanised, loan of equipment
or whatever, we have been able to rely on him to help
out. His family has also been keen contributors and
members of the club, with a son Sam sailing today and
being an event sponsor, and wife Pauline having acted
as Vice Commodore for several years. Port Dalrymple
Yacht Club honours Nick Edmunds, Life Member.

New Yacht Trackers for 2010
A new company called Ocean Track based in Hobart has built satellite trackers that
were successfully trialled in the recent Tasports Maria Island Race and will be used
in the Sargissons Launceston to Hobart Race commencing on 27th December. The Three
Peaks race will be the third event to use these devices and from experience two years
ago the support from followers of the race using the tracking web pages is very significant.
The race committee had been looking at a French/English alternative but the advantage
of a local product could not be ignored. Yacht information can be better displayed
on web pages that can be designed for the race needs. The race has agreed to use
these trackers for the next five races
Coles Bay Jetty
Recent radio and newspaper reports about the Coles Bay jetty give some welcome news
that it will be replaced. Residents of Coles Bay have been concerned for many years
about the poor state of repair and Parks and Wildlife Service has seen fit in recent
years to restrict access due to safety concerns.
The Three Peaks committee has been advised that Marine and Safety Tasmania will take
responsibility following approval by State Parliament. MAST already
has draft plans for the replacement jetty and will be in a position to start the demolition
and reconstruction when it has proper authority. With the timeframes given MAST might
be able start work after Christmas but bearing in mind the summer holiday period and
the water activities up to Easter it is likely works will commence immediately after
Easter to impose the least disruption. Three Peaks and the east coast boating community
will look forward to and welcome the new construction.
Crew Register
While it is still some months until next Easter early April 2010, there
are a number of runners who have lodged their details seeking positions with teams.
To be fair to the runners, sailors need to give these people some firm commitment
as early as possible as they have to put in months of training to be sufficiently fit
to run any, and mostly all, of the three mountain running legs.
Details of these runners can be found on the website at the Crew Register page.
Competitor News Greg Prescott importing yacht
A Melges 32, the first to be in Tasmanian waters, is expected to race in the 2010 race. Well known and widely experienced sailor
Greg Prescott who last competed in the Three Peaks Race in 1996 will be very competive
in this yacht, a design that is well proven, fast sailing and easy to handle.
Greg has 4 Three Peaks Races to his credit and sailing his J35 Southern Cross Television demonstrated
that sailing a smaller yacht he could surprise many larger yachts with his skill in
handling all types of weather. This year Greg, along with a number of other Three Peaks
Race competitors, will be sailing in the Sydney to Hobart Race. What makes Greg's
race special this Christmas/New Year is that he will be doing his 25th race.
Three Peaks flavour added to the Point to Pinnacle
Team Whistler sailed by David Rees gave the Point to Pinnacle Race that starts
at the Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Sandy Bay and finishes at the summit of Mt Wellington
a definite Three Peaks Race flavour. Competing in the demanding Tasports Maria Island
Race in a gale force start on the Friday evening of 20th November through to the finish
on Saturday the 21st, David and his Three Peaks crew competed in the mountain run the
next day early on the Sunday morning. His race team consisted of sailors Jory Linscott
and Tim Jones with runners Jackie Guy and Michael McIntyre all of whom completed the
mountain run in respectable time the best being Michael McIntyre's time of
1 hour 43 minutes, just 13 minutes behind the winner.
After competing in the 2010 race this team plans to compete in the British Three Peaks
Race in June, a Tasmanian team sailing in both of the tough Three Peaks Races in the
same year.
Other Tasmanian teams have previously sailed in both races. The founder of the Australian
Race, Martin Pryor sailed the British Race in 1987 as Team Tasmania and raced in and
won the 1993 race in Tasmania. Nick Edmunds also raced a team in both races in the
same year also competing as Team Tasmania. It looks like David Rees' team might be
the first with the same team members to do both races in the same year.
