2005 Press Release No 8 News Summary
22 March 2005 Fine Weather Forecast for Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks RaceInterstate competitors in the Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race are making their way across a placid Bass Strait to Beauty Point in Northern Tasmania, as a persistent high pressure system brings fine, calm conditions, expected to remain until after the start on Good Friday. Light winds could plague the campaign of early favourite Elite Renovations (Phillip Marshall, Devonport) seeking to improve on their 2004 runner-up result. West Tamar skipper Nick Edmunds, a two-time winner aboard Haphazard, will be hoping an approaching cold front will give heavier upwind sailing conditions later in the weekend. The oldest competitor in the event, Hobart skipper David Taylor (67) sailing his Sydney Hobart Race veteran yacht Pippin, is competing for the first time in the popular, fully-crewed division, and looking forward to a new challenge. Governor of Tasmania and Race Patron, His Excellency Mr William Cox, will fire the start cannon at 2pm, Good Friday at Inspection Head wharf, Beauty Point to send competitors on their way to Flinders Island. A crowd of up to 10,000 people is expected to assemble at the start line, and vantage points along the Tamar River.
