2005 Press Release No 5 News Summary
25 November 2004 Major Three Peaks partnership extends to third yearHydro Tasmania will retain the naming rights of the Three Peaks Race for a third consecutive year as major sponsor of this unique and challenging event. Announcing the sponsorship in Hobart today, Hydro Tasmania Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Willis, said strength, endurance and skill form the basis of success in the Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race. “These are attributes that attracted Hydro Tasmania’s support and they are also attributes that are important for success in business,” Mr Willis said. “We will be relying on our people to make us winners when we enter the National Electricity Market next year just as the Three Peaks relies on its volunteers and competitors to ensure the success of their event. “And like Hydro Tasmania, the Three Peaks Race and its competitors face the vagaries of the weather to provide them with the energy they need to succeed.” Welcoming Hydro Tasmania’s continued support, Race Director Alastair Douglas said the race will celebrate its seventeenth year in 2005. “We are hoping for an exciting event next year to showcase the race for greater interstate participation,” Mr Douglas said. “Next year the manager of the Victorian Ocean Racing Club, Bob Tanner, will join the race along with what we expect will be a significant contingent from Victoria to build on this year’s turnout. “Next year we will also introduce simplified rules for the cruising division of the race.” The 2005 Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race will start on Good Friday 25 March from Beauty Point and finish the following Monday in Hobart at Constitution Dock. Competitors in the race will run 140 kilometres up Mt Freycinet on the east coast of Tasmania, Mt Strzelecki on Flinders Island and Mt Wellington in Hobart. The crews will also sail 600 kilometres of Tasmania’s coastline. Entry forms and information for next year’s race are available from the official website at www.threepeaks.org.au.
