2005 Press Release No 2 News Summary
25 November 2004 Line honours wide open for endurance challengeWith the retirement of the very successful winner of the last four races, the chance of being the overall winner for the 2005 Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race will look very attractive for a number of teams. Terry Travers, skipper of last year's winner API Mersey Pharmacy, announced at the conclusion of the race the team would be taking a break from the competition although they did contemplate a reunion race in a few year's time. This will now not happen as champion runner, world rogaining champion Nigel Aylott was tragically killed whilst competing in an ultra endurance event in the USA. Last year's runner-up, the very well sailed Devonport catamaran Slingshot skippered by Phillip Marshall with top class runners Mark Guy from Hobart and Paul Mackenzie from Launceston will be a favourite for a win as long as the weather over Easter provides favourable winds. Mark Guy with the weekend win of the Point to Pinnacle race to his credit with running partner Mackenzie will also be favourites to win the coveted King of the Mountains trophy. Expressions of interest for entries in next year's race indicate that possibly six yachts could compete from Victoria, together with two from New South Wales that will swell the fleet size beyond the 2004 race entry number of 15. Race Director Alastair Douglas believes that there could be at least a 20 yacht fleet making it the second largest fleet in the race's history.
