2004 Press Release No 1

News Summary

15 February 2004

Runners Left Stranded

Over 20 endurance runners have expressed interest in the 2004 Hydro Tasmania Three Peaks Race, leaving the race committee struggling to find sufficient yachts and crew interested in competing.

The Three Peaks starts at Beauty Point on Good Friday, 9th April, and ends in Hobart four days later. Runners from each team scale Mt Strzelecki on Flinders Island, Mt Freycinet at Coles Bay and Mt Wellington in Hobart, crossing the finishing line at Constitution Dock. The race, now in its 16th year, covers approximately 335 nautical miles and 131 kilometres.

Runners from Australia, Scotland, New Zealand and the USA have registered with organisers and are waiting for placements. “ Any sailor planning to compete can be assured on enlisting very competent long distant runners, many of whom can assist with sailing tasks,” said race director Alastair Douglas. “Many runners will be competing for the first time, a really good sign for the event,” he said.

Entries are open until Friday 7th March.

Further information about runners or the race can be obtained from the race director, Alastair Douglas or from the website www.threepeaks.org.au.
