Design: Inglis 39
Division: 1 Main Racing
Crew: Mark Ballard (Previous races 3), Hobart; Jason van Zetten (1), Launceston;
Hamish Moore (0), Hobart; Jacqui Guy (5), Hobart; David Rose (0), Hobart.
A team that is due for a big finish having been unlucky in previous years not
to feature better in the results. The yacht is smart and could provide an upset
to some of the larger yachts even with their greater onboard experience.
Definitely looking for adventure as well as having a great time this team comes
with a mixture of experienced crew and newcomers keen to experience the challenge
of the race.
Team 2: ZAB Window Fashions
Design: Adams 11.9m
Division: 1 Main Racing
Tilman
Crew: Tristan Gourlay (2), Launceston; Rob Gourlay (2), Hobart; Matthew Ramsden
(2), Hobart; Rod Barnes (3), Launceston; Mark Wrigley (0).
Previously raced as Team Youth and then was the youngest team to ever compete
in the Three Peaks Race, they acquitted themselves very well on both sea and
land surprising the more experienced teams. The yacht has performed well in local
races over the past seasons and will certainly be pushing some of the more prominent
teams.
Team 3: Hydro Wind Power
Design: Radford 14
Division: 3 Fully Crewed Racing
Crew: Richard Edmunds (14), Sidmouth; Phillippa Edmunds (1), Sidmouth; Phil O'Sign
(11), Low Head; Aaron Tidey (1), Hillwood; Richard Bishop (1), Launceston; Alan
Graham (1), Launceston; David Milne (5), Windermere; Paul Snare (0), Launceston;
Kathryn Baker (0), George Town; Steve Bense (5), Launceston; Lloyd Febey (11),
Burnie.
A an entrant in the cruising division last year and taking
the yacht's usual weekend race crew to allow them to experience the Three Peaks
Race with his regular Three Peaks team was such a success that they are back
again but competing in the new Fully Crewed Race division.
The Radford designed yacht will benefit from having the
full crew able to drive it hard for the total distance and supported by capable
runners they should do well. Richard has good form with this yacht and his
team winning the race in 1995.
Team 4: Haphazard
Design: Radford 14
Division: 1 Main Racing
Crew: Nick Edmunds (14) Sidmouth. Ross Edmunds (5), Sidmouth; Sam Edmunds (6),
Sidmouth; David Wright (14), Bridgenorth; Sam Thompson (1), Launceston.
Another powerful Radford 14 aluminium sloop that has a strong record in Three
Peaks competition that is only second to skipper Nick Edmunds who, like his brother
Richard has competed in every Australian Three Peaks Race as well as one British
Three Peaks Race.
A former two times winner of the race (1991 and 2000) Nick and his team will
provide a formidable opponent especially should there be tough sailing conditions.

Team 5: Austchoice
Design: Chamberlin 30 foot catamaran
Division: 1 Main Racing
Crew: Phillip Marshall (10) Port Sorell; Steve Walker (7), Wynyard; Tony Guy
(7), Launceston; Mark Guy (6); Lenah Valley Tas; Paul McKenzie (3), Launceston.
A fast lightweight catamaran that has the definite potential to win. They have
the speed, skill and experience and they will hope that the weather gods allow
for fresh eased sheet conditions that will provide them the power to challenge
the larger catamaran and the larger monohulls in the race.
Team 6: Smart Reading
Design: Hick 35.
Division: 3 Fully Crewed Racing
Crew: Mick Hawes (1), Conningham; Damien Killalea (3), Hobart; Tim Malone (2),
Kettering; Mick Malone (2), Kettering; Ian Berry (0), Somerset; Rick Ferguson
(0), Somerset; Alf Doerdens (0), Kettering.
A new yacht to compete in the race that will be matched well amongst some of
the smaller yachts in the fleet. They can be expected to do well in their group
with the cunning of Damien Killalea and Steve Brinkhoff from their previous experience
in this race. A sister-ship to a Sydney Hobart Race winner Midnight Rambler they
would like some strong conditions to enhance their place against some larger
yachts.

Team 7: Balmoral on York
Design: Joubert 43
Division: 2 Cruising
Tilman Trophy entrant
Crew: John Joyce (4), Launceston; Iain Law (1), Launceston; Bruce Nye (2), Launceston;
John Poynter (2), Launceston; Harvey Griggs (1), Rockhampton Qld.
John has the same team that competed successfully in the Cruising Division in
2001 when they said that they the most sailing fun ever.
Racing this time for the Balmoral on York Motel they will enjoy some comforts
aboard that other teams will miss. The 43 ft Bounty design yacht will provide
good speed in free sheet sailing and a comfortable living space for the crew.
To gain extra Tilman points they plan to run four runners on Mt Wellington and
are raising money for Canteen.
John Joyce
This is the same crew as in 2001 and they
are in it for the fun, the camaraderie and the challenge of competing against others
teams and the elements. They have all been looking forward to the event for the
past year.
This crew is competing for the Tilman trophy and is raising money for Canteen.
The average age of the team is 48 and is the oldest crew this year.
Team 8: the beach
Design: Adams 10.
Division: 1 Main Racing
Tliman Trophy entrant
Crew: Andrew Ostler (7), Howden; Andrew Bowerman (0), Triabunna; Blackmans Bay;
Angus Sprott (7), Margate; Alexis Bull (1), Mornington; Stuart McFadzean (0),
Hobart.
One of the smaller yachts in the fleet but with a mixture of accomplished and
experienced crew with some recent competitors they could surprise many teams
so long as the weather doesn't provide heavy windward conditions.
Andrew Ostler and Ben Fasnacht
A keen Tilman team they would rate a good chance
with their all-round performance that has been a feature this team has shown
in its previous races.
All five of this team can be expected to run Mt Wellington for Tilman points
and as an extra they are raising money for The Cancer Council Tasmania and Camp
Quality.
Their quote for the race: "When you think you have faced up to the challenge
the real challenge begins."
Team 9: API Mersey Pharmacy
Design:
Chamberlin 38 catamaran
Division: 1 Main Racing
Crew: Robin Chamberlin (8), Queensland; Terry Travers (5), Devonport; Peter
Fletcher (7), Lenah Valley; Nigel Aylott (4), Emerald Victoria; Andrew Kromar
(6), Mt Beauty Victoria.
Winner in 2001 and 2002 they are hoping
for favourable winds and their share of good luck, API Mersey hopes to be able
to score the elusive hat trick of three consecutive race wins but can be assured
that they will be pushed to the limit in this Division by Haphazard and Austchoice.
Robin Chamberlin
While a win might look good on paper nothing is
certain in this race and even with their considerable skill and experience
some hard windward work for the yacht will pose a considerable task to stay
ahead.
Their quote for the race: "Our third year together as a complete team.
We'll give it our best again and see if the team is good for one more victory.
We're getting older - but we are still grinning!"
Team 10: Iron Overload
Design: 40 ft ketch
Division: 2 Cruising
Crew: Ben Marris (0) Kettering; George Marris (0), Kettering; Julie Quinn (0),
Macquarie ACT; David Baldwin (0), Macquarie ACT; Gary Lilley (0), Calwell ACT.
A new team in the race they are looking to do well in the Cruising Division
and is competing for the coveted Tilman Trophy. Ben has a strong and experienced
team of sailors and runners who should ensure that in spite of the first Three
Peaks Race they will acquit themselves well.
The yacht Saona is a classic, built in 1936 by Charles Lucas at Battery Point
to a design by Philip Rhodes. Its last significant voyage was the 1998 Tall
Ships Race and previously it comfortably cruised to New Zealand with a crew
of an average age of 65 years.
The team is raising money for the Iron Overload Disorder Support Group of
Tasmania that assists people with the most common inherited disorder known
as haemochromatosis. Early diagnosis can prevent the occurrence of arthritis,
diabetes, chronic fatigue, liver disorders and cardiomyopathy. Ben is passionate
about preventing people from suffering from this unnecessary disease.
Team 11: Underwater Video
Systems
Design: Mumm 36
Division: 3 Fully Crewed Racing
Crew: Jeff Cordell (12) Hobart; Andy Davidson (4), Hobart; Dan Followes (0),
Hobart; Peter Mantel (0); David McFarlane (7), Legana; Michael Booth (0), Launceston;
Michael Viney (3), Blackmans Bay; Steve Catchpool (1), Hobart.
Another team that is well overdue for a major result at the finish. Full marks
always can be awarded for enthusiasm to this team that has been long-time and
great supporter of the race.
Team 12: Patrick Harbro
Design: Sparkman & Stephen 34
Division: 2 Cruising
Crew: Peter Gibson (4), Devonport; Jamie Cooper (1), Lilydale; Les Savage (9),
Devonport; John Rist (1), Port Sorell; Nigel Harris (1), Devonport; David Kent
(5), Devonport.
A consistent performer that surprised many teams in hard headwind conditions
when they sailed around Tasman Island rather than take the "short cut" through
the Denison Canal picking up five places in the process.
Their quote for the race: "Les likes round numbers - wants to do his
tenth [race]."
Team 13:
Design:
Division:
Crew:
Team 14: Misty
Design: Sparkman & Stephens 34
Division: Main
Crew: Bryan Claque (0), Bittern Vic; Richard Ecclestone (4), Tarragindi Qld;
Darren Pithie (1), Brighton Vic.
Another classic yacht, the design being brought to fame by the former British
Prime Minister Ted Heath who won the 1970 Sydney to Hobart Race in the famous
Morning Cloud that inspired the "Morning ..." series on names for
the S&S34 class. Misty is competing in the race for the first time and
will be keen to match its performance against the S&S34 of Peter Gibson.
The experience of runner Richard Ecclestone will assist the team with the concept
of racing in this unique event.
